What a COR actually is

A COR (Certificate of Recognition) is Alberta's health and safety certification for employers. It is issued through a certifying partner after an employer's health and safety management system has been audited against provincial standards, and it has to be maintained through further audits over time.

When a site owner requires one

Prime contractors, producers and facility operators commonly set a COR as a minimum bar for contractors working on their sites. It is most often required where the work is on an active lease site or facility, where a prime contractor carries responsibility for everyone on the ground, or where a corporate prequalification process screens contractors before any purchase order is issued.

Plenty of other work (municipal, commercial and private property maintenance, and vegetation work off active sites) is awarded without a COR requirement, on the strength of insurance and documentation instead.
