What the Bylaws Typically Require
The bylaw requires property owners (including renters, if specified in your lease) to remove snow and ice from public sidewalks adjacent to their property within 24 hours of the snowfall ending. This includes:
- Snow accumulation from any source — including city plows

- Packed snow that becomes a slip hazard
"Adjacent" means the sidewalk that runs alongside your property line. Corner lots have two sides to clear. If the city plows push snow onto your sidewalk, you're still responsible for clearing it.

The timer starts when snowfall ends, not when it starts. In cold climates, where storms can last 12–18 hours, this matters. If snow stops falling at 2 AM, you have until 2 AM the next night.
